Prenatal Vitamins

Prenatal vitamins are made from a group of organic compounds essential for healthy pregnancy growth and nutrition. Some compounds need to be included in the diet and consumed in small quantities because our bodies cannot synthesize these crucial nutrients on our own.

Prenatal Vitamins and Diets

Even if you have the “perfect” diet, prenatal vitamins are still strongly encouraged because certain nutrients like folic acid, iron, calcium, and vitamin D are imperative for your developing baby’s health. Furthermore, many people easily fall deficient in these particular nutrients.
Your baby’s health is not worth any nutritional risks. For instance, if you’re lacking folic acid, you could be putting your baby’s neural development in jeopardy. Folic acid plays an important role in protecting your unborn baby from developing brain or spinal cord defects. Another example is iron. Many people lack iron in their diets and iron is another nutrient that is crucial in healthy, normal brain and blood development.

Start Prenatal Vitamins Before Conception

Ideally, women should start prenatal vitamins prior to conception. It’s hard to plan conception out perfectly as the truth is many pregnancies come as a surprise. In this case, just start taking your prenatal vitamins as soon as you find out you’re pregnant. Vitamin consumption should continue into the postpartum period as well.
The mother is also building up her vitamin stores with the help of these crucial nutrients. Carrying a growing baby for 10 months takes a lot of building blocks in the form of nutrition and it can be detrimental to mother’s body as well as the baby’s if she does not receive proper care.

Consult With Women’s First, First!

When choosing a prenatal vitamin, make sure you consult with your doctor. You want to make sure your prenatal vitamins do not conflict with other medications or foods that you might be consuming. You also want to make sure you take quality prenatal vitamins that include all major nutrients needed for a healthy pregnancy. The ingredients can vary from one brand of prenatal vitamins to another, so it is important to be aware.
