Well-Woman Care in New Jersey

A well-woman visit is an important way to help you stay healthy, and should be scheduled every year with your doctor. At Women’s First Health Center, we offer well-woman care to patients of all ages which include annual gynecological exams, help with your period symptoms, and help with any questions or concerns you may have about your gynecological health. An annual well-woman visit also helps you establish a relationship with your doctor, allowing you to be as comfortable as possible during your visit.

What Happens During a Well-Woman Visit?

Well-woman visits include a full checkup, focusing on preventative care for women. It’s a chance for you to focus on your overall health and wellness, and is a foundation of your gynecological health. An annual well-woman visit usually involves a review of your personal history and health habits, a physical exam, and future health recommendations.

Review of Personal and Medical History

Before your physical exam, your doctor at Women’s First Health Center will ask you to answer some questions about your overall health. These questions may cover subjects such as your:

  • Medical and family health history
  • Sexual health and sexual partners
  • Use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs
  • Eating habits and physical activity

While reviewing your personal history, this is a great time to ask your doctor any questions or concerns you may have. Make a list of questions for your doctor including questions about birth control options, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), pregnancy, or if you’re due for any shots or screenings. Don’t be afraid to take a notebook with you and write down the answers to your questions so that you can easily remember them later.

Female Physical Exam

After reviewing your personal and medical history, your doctor will perform a physical examination of your body, which may involve:

  • Measuring your height and weight
  • Checking your blood pressure
  • An abdominal exam to check for masses or other abnormalities
  • breast exam– examining your breasts and under your arms to check for lumps or other changes
  • A pelvic exam – examination of your vulva, vagina, cervix, uterus, and ovaries and often a routine check for STDs
  • Pap smear test – checks for precancerous cells in the cervix; pap smear testing should begin at age 21 and per ACOG guidelines is recommended every one to  three years for women ages 21 to 65 .
Future Health Recommendations

After the examination, you and your doctor will discuss the next steps for keeping you healthy. Make sure to talk to your doctor about which screenings you need. Screening tests are one of the most important aspects of keeping up your health. At your well-woman visit, your doctor may recommend screening you for certain types of cancerHPV, HIV and other STDs, and any follow-up services that are right for you. After you are done with your appointment, try to schedule a follow-up appointment before you leave!
