A hysterectomy is the surgical removal of all or part of a woman’s uterus. There are several reasons a woman may need a hysterectomy, but it is a serious decision to be made between a woman and her healthcare provider. The doctors at Women First Health Center are skilled and experienced in detecting the symptoms and signs that a woman might need a hysterectomy, and at performing the actual procedure with precision and care.
There are several different reasons a doctor may call for a partial or total hysterectomy. A partial hysterectomy is the removal of just part of the uterus, while a total hysterectomy involves the removal of the entire organ. Reasons for consideration of removal include:
- Uterine Fibroids: Growths on the uterus that are usually benign (noncancerous) but tend to cause severe pain and bleeding.
- Abnormal uterine bleeding: Heavy vaginal bleeding from the lining of the uterus.
- Cervical dysplasia: A change in the lining of the cells of the uterus.
- Endometriosis: Abnormal growth of cells outside of the uterus. This condition causes patients severe, chronic pain.
Women should always consult with a gynecologist if they feel pain when urinating, during sexual intercourse, with pressure, or have abnormal bleeding. A hysterectomy is usually preferred amongst women who are postmenopausal, meaning they are no longer having periods. Other treatments will be considered for premenopausal women to avoid having to remove the uterus.
Hysterectomies are usually performed via laparoscope through the vagina. This results in a much shorter recovery time and less risk than the traditional method of utilizing an incision through the abdomen. Patients are usually able to return to normal activities within a couple weeks of the procedure, although it varies based on each individual’s unique case.
