Abnormal Uterine Bleeding

The Causes, Diagnosis and Treatment for Abnormal Uterine Bleeding

While bleeding is perfectly normal during a woman’s menstrual cycle, there are certain occasions in which bleeding takes place abnormally – specifically from the uterus. Bleeding between menstrual cycles, after sexual intercourse, post-menopause, or bleeding heavier than normal during a menstrual cycle are all categorized as instances of abnormal uterine bleeding. Understanding the causes, diagnostic practices and treatment for this condition will be extremely beneficial to those women who may be going through it.

Causes of Abnormal Uterine Bleeding

It’s important to note that although abnormal uterine bleeding can occur at any age, there are periods of time it is more common; abnormal, irregular bleeding usually happens when a girl (9-16 years of age) goes through her first menstrual cycle, or when a woman (typically 50 years of age) nears menopause. However, other causes of abnormal uterine bleeding include miscarriage, an ectopic pregnancy, pregnancy, infection of the uterus, polyps, fibroids, adenomyosis, polycystic ovary syndrome, endometrial hyperplasia, infection of the cervix, uterine cancer, cervical cancer and vaginal cancer.

Diagnosis of Abnormal Uterine Bleeding

Since many of the causes behind abnormal uterine bleeding can be dangerous if left untreated, it is important to diagnose exactly what is provoking the syndrome as soon as possible. One of our OB-GYN’s will gather your medical history, family’s health history and ask you to describe your menstrual cycle. This menstrual cycle description will be an important role in the diagnosis, and it’s advised that you keep track of the length, type of bleeding and dates of your average period prior to speaking with a physician. Additional diagnostic practices we may utilize include a basic physical examination, blood tests, sonohysterography, ultrasound, hysteroscopy, or an endometrial biopsy.

Treatment for Abnormal Uterine Bleeding

Treatment options for abnormal uterine bleeding will vary, depending on a woman’s age and the cause. Birth control pills are commonly an option – they usually make irregular bleeding more normalized, and contain hormones that prevent your uterine lining from getting too thick. Another form of birth control (and convenient form of treatment) is an intrauterine device (IUD), a small device inserted into the uterus; the hormones released from the IUD also prevent abnormal bleeding. A procedure that further diagnoses and prevents heavy bleeding is a dilation and curettage, in which the uterus lining is scraped away and sent out for further testing. More invasive forms of treatment include a hysterectomy – a surgery that removes the uterus – or an endometrial ablation – a surgery that destroys the uterine lining.
