Gynecology for Teenagers in Essex County
Women First Health Center is the trusted provider of gynecology services to teen patients in West Orange, New Jersey. It is important for teenagers to feel comfortable with their healthcare provider so that we are able to provide comprehensive care based on their needs.
Your First Gynecologic Visit
Many parents feel uneasy about their teen going to the gynecologist for the first time, and teens probably feel the same way. We recommend teenagers come in for an exam after their first menstrual cycle. The first exam is usually external only, so teens do not have to worry about an internal exam or pap smear until they are sexually active or 21. During the initial appointment, we establish a relationship with the teen so that they feel comfortable enough to open up to us. Women First Health Center can assure that we will make your daughter feel comfortable and relaxed during their first appointment.
At the appointment, we typically ask teens the following questions:
- How often do you exercise?
- Do you smoke?
- Do you drink?
- At what age did you get your first period?
- When was your last period?
- How often does your menstrual period last?
- Do you experience any cramping, acne, heavy bleeding, or irregularities in your period?
- Are you sexually active? This includes vaginal, anal, and/or oral sex.
- Do you have any questions for us?
Birth Control Pill for Teens in West Orange
We may also suggest birth control pills to aid in period discomfort that your teen may experience, or to prevent unwanted pregnancy if she is sexually active. The professionals at Women First Health Associates are compassionate and here to help your daughter live the healthiest life possible.
Teenage Girls and HPV Shot in Essex County
We also recommend the HPV shot. This vaccination prevents against HPV, which 50% of women suffer with. The shot prevents HPV, which can lead to serious health concerns including cervical cancer. We strongly encourage girls and boys to get the vaccine when they are young, but if they haven’t gotten it by their teenage years we can administer it right from our office in three sessions.
It is important to talk to your teenage daughter about her sexual health, no matter how uncomfortable it may make you feel. By establishing an open dialogue, you can ensure she receives the proper healthcare and guidance throughout her teenage years.
