Dr. Sonya Youngren
Dr. Sonya Youngren, MD, FACOG, is a board-certified Obstetrician-Gynecologist who co-founded Women First Health Center with Dr. Claudine Sylvester. She attended Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA where she received her Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Biological Sciences. She then received her Medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Her residency training was completed at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, NJ, where she was also Chief Resident in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Dr. Youngren began her career as a general obstetrician and gynecologist at Redmond OB/GYN, LLP in Redmond, OR, where she was a partner. She then moved on to Overlook OB/GYN Associates and Healthstart Prenatal care in Summit, NJ. Today, Dr. Youngren is a partner at Women First Health Center in West Orange, NJ. Her fields of interest include general gynecology, general and high risk obstetrics, and basic infertility issues. She brings with her a wide array of experience and has made a significant impact on our practice.
Through the years, Dr. Youngren has taken part in various research activity. As a young student, she participated in clinical visits of trisomy 21 patients, held genetic counseling visits, and assisted in the lab with projects involving the development of fluorescent DNA probing of sex chromosomes at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Several years later, she took part in the UMDNJ Women’s Health Initiative by performing screening visits and determining eligibility of participants in a NIH funded study. Her most recent work was at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, where she presented her research on transvaginal cervical length as a predictor of preterm delivery on Lefkovics Resident Research Day.
Dr. Youngren is originally from New Jersey and currently resides here with her husband and four children. She has participated in numerous marathon races as a result of her active and healthy lifestyle which she passionately promotes among her patients.
